Emma Churchman is a nationally certified trauma chaplain, 3x bestselling author, writer, and nationally recognized speaker with more than 25 years of experience at the intersection of crisis, trauma, leadership, and recovery.

Emma's Work Begins Where the Old Playbook Ends

Some moments change everything.

A disaster.
A loss.
A leadership crisis.
An unexpected disruption.
A season in which the answers that once worked no longer do.

These moments test more than plans and procedures. They test our ability to stay present, make decisions, communicate clearly, care for people, and continue moving when the full path is not yet visible.

Emma’s work examines what happens in those moments - and what becomes possible when we stop defining resilience as simply “bouncing back.”

Through storytelling, practical frameworks, and more than two decades of real-world experience, she helps audiences explore a better question:

How do we move forward with greater clarity, capacity, and humanity after the ground has shifted?

This Work Is Professional.
It Is Also Deeply Personal.

Emma did not come to the subjects of trauma and resilience from a distance.

She grew up in a family shaped by severe mental illness, abuse, and generational trauma. Her mother lived with 123 distinct personalities. Emma later lost her father and all three of her brothers to suicide.

Those experiences led her into decades of study and work focused on trauma, spiritual resilience, leadership, and the ways people reconstruct their lives after profound disruption.

Then, in September 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina.Emma’s small Appalachian community of Gerton was among those caught in the destruction. As a nationally certified trauma chaplain, she served her neighbors through the immediate emergency and the long, complicated recovery that followed.

That experience brought every dimension of her work together: crisis leadership, disaster recovery, trauma, grief, community, meaning, and the question of how people continue when the world they knew has changed.

It also reinforced the truth at the heart of Emma’s work: The crisis does not end when the emergency does.

Leadership, Crisis, and the Human Work of Recovery

Emma’s speaking and writing center on four interconnected areas:

Leadership Under Pressure

How leaders make clear decisions, communicate honestly, and maintain trust when certainty disappears.

Trauma and the Human Impact of Crisis

How disruption affects the way people think, respond, relate, work, and recover - often long after the visible emergency has passed.

Disaster and Long-Term Recovery

What happens to leaders, frontline workers, volunteers, organizations, and communities when the headlines fade but the recovery continues.

Organizational Resilience

How organizations can navigate sustained disruption without sacrificing the people responsible for carrying the mission forward.

From Lived Experience to the Stage

Emma brings a combination of expertise to the stage that few leadership speakers can offer:

Trauma + Disaster Recovery + Leadership + Organizational Resilience

She has addressed audiences ranging from corporate and association leaders to disaster-response professionals, nonprofit organizations, faith communities, frontline workers, and national conference attendees.

Her presentations combine compelling storytelling with practical frameworks audiences can use to:

  • Make decisions under pressure

  • Communicate clearly during uncertainty

  • Recognize the human impact of sustained crisis

  • Maintain trust when people are overwhelmed

  • Support teams carrying high-stakes responsibility

  • Move from immediate response toward meaningful recovery

Emma has delivered keynote and plenary presentations for the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, Mennonite Disaster Service, Women’s Business Enterprise National Council organizations, Warren Wilson College, and other business, nonprofit, and disaster-recovery audiences.

Essays and Articles About What We Carry - And How We Move Forward

Emma writes about the places where public events and private human experience meet.

Her articles and essays explore disaster recovery, trauma, leadership, community, spirituality, grief, resilience, and life in Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.

Whether she is writing for a national publication, a local readership, or her own audience, Emma brings readers beneath the surface of an event to examine what it means for the people living through it.

Her work has appeared in or been featured by publications and media outlets including SUCCESS Magazine, The Guardian, On Being, Mountain Xpress, and WLOS News 13.

Resilience is Not About Going Back

Resilience is often described as the ability to bounce back.

But after a life-changing crisis, there may be no going back.

The organization has changed.
The community has changed.
The people have changed.

Emma’s work is not about restoring an old version of normal. It is about helping people understand what has changed, honor what has been carried, and move forward with greater wisdom, capacity, clarity, and connection.

That is the work of trauma-resilient leadership.
